Why European-car owners choose an independent shop

These guys are great. They are super friendly, honest and they do good work. For the past few years I’ve been looking for a good local mechanic and gone to a few places around the area. I had taken my car to the Audi Dealership before and my car came out worse than it came in. So I took it to VTech and they not only fixed what that Dealership didn’t but did a great job at it too. … They take the time to explain what caused the problem what they did to fix it which for me is great customer service. …

Where your BMW, Audi or Mercedes gets maintained and repaired is your choice, under factory warranty or after it (see the warranty question below). Plenty of owners stay with the dealer, and plenty of dealers do good work. An independent shop offers something different.

At a dealership, you usually talk to a service advisor who passes along what a technician found. At V-Tech Auto Services, you hear it from the team that works on your car: what's wrong, how we know, what's urgent and what can wait. You can ask your questions directly, and you decide what gets done.

European makes we work on

We work on small and medium-size foreign and domestic vehicles of all major makes, and that includes European brands:

  • BMW
  • Audi
  • Mercedes-Benz

Driving a different European make? Call with the year and model. If it's a car we're the right shop for, we'll say so, and if it isn't, we'll say that too. We work on Japanese and Korean makes too, like Lexus, Honda, Toyota and Kia. See all our services.

European car repair on the North Shore: what we fix

These are the same services we offer on every car, with what tends to come up on European models:

  • Brakes. Many European cars have electronic pad-wear sensors that light a warning on the dash when the pads get thin, and the sensor often needs replacing along with the pads. More on our brake repair page.
  • Engine.Oil leaks from gaskets that harden with age, worn ignition coils and spark plugs (you'll feel a misfire as shaking or stumbling), and cooling-system leaks. Many European engines use plastic cooling parts that get brittle over the years.
  • Electrical.Batteries, starters and alternators. These cars are full of electronics, and a weak battery can set off a string of warnings that look unrelated.
  • AC and heating.Weak heat, foggy windows, AC blowing warm. See AC and heating repair.
  • Transmission.Manual and automatic. See transmission repair.
  • Maintenance and oil changes. Many European engines call for an oil that carries the carmaker's own approval code, listed in your owner's manual. On these engines, using the oil the manual calls for matters. See routine maintenance.

Check engine and warning lights on European cars

European cars tend to tell you more, in more ways: a check engine light, text messages in the dash display, service reminders, and separate warnings for brake pads, oil level and coolant. Many newer BMW and Mercedes models don't even have an oil dipstick. An electronic sensor reports the level instead.

A warning doesn't always mean what it says, either. Low battery voltage alone can light up several at once. We read the stored codes, test what they point to, and tell you which warnings matter and which don't. Our check engine light page explains when it's fine to keep driving and when to stop.

What we don't do

Knowing a shop's limits helps you choose the right one:

  • Factory warranty repairs and recalls. If your car is still under its factory warranty and something covered breaks, or if there's an open recall, the dealer does that repair and the manufacturer pays for it. We'll tell you that, rather than take a job you shouldn't be paying for.
  • Prepaid dealer maintenance. If your purchase came with maintenance already paid for at the dealer, use it.

What customers say on Google

… His staff are amazing and everyone there is so friendly and helpful, they really treat you like family. … They bailed me out of a bad situation I was in when my Mercedes Sprinter had a crack in the Manifold and needed immediate attention. …

European Car Repair FAQs

Can an independent shop work on my BMW or Audi?

Yes. You can have a BMW, Audi or Mercedes serviced wherever you choose. Covered warranty repairs and recalls are the exception: those belong at the dealer. At V-Tech Auto Services, our team is led by a Master Mechanic with 28 years on foreign and domestic cars. If your job is one we're not set up for, we'll tell you before you bring the car in.

Will using an independent shop void my warranty?

In general, no. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) says a carmaker can't void your warranty or deny coverage just because maintenance or repairs were done by an independent shop. A carmaker can still deny a specific claim if it shows that outside work or parts caused the problem. Keep every receipt, follow the schedule in your owner's manual, and if the car is still under factory warranty, check with your dealer before major work.

What kind of parts go on a European car?

OEM parts (original equipment manufacturer) are made by or for the carmaker. Aftermarket parts are made by other companies, and their quality ranges widely. The right choice depends on the part and the car. Ask about the parts for your job before you approve it. It's a fair question, and you should get a straight answer.

Why is my BMW's check engine light on?

For the same kinds of reasons as any car: a worn ignition coil or spark plug causing a misfire, a failing sensor, a cracked vacuum hose, or a loose gas cap. The code tells us where to start, and testing tells us what actually failed. If the light is flashing, ease off and call us.

Will it cost less than the dealership?

We don't promise a number against the dealer, because it depends on the car, the job and the parts. What you can count on is knowing what's wrong, what it costs and what can wait before any work starts, and you decide what gets done.

Do you work on Mercedes Sprinter vans?

We have. Bruce Aleo's review on this page is about his Sprinter and its cracked manifold. Vans vary a lot in size and setup, so call with the year and the problem, and we'll tell you whether it's a job for us.
