Engine symptoms in plain words, and how serious they are

Engines usually warn you before they quit. Here's what the common warnings feel like and what they can point to. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: the same symptom can have more than one cause.

Fix now: stop driving and call

  • Overheating. The temperature gauge climbs toward hot, or steam comes from under the hood. Driving an overheating engine can warp metal parts and turn a cooling problem into a much bigger repair.
  • A loud, deep knock that speeds up as the engine revs. It can mean wear deep inside the engine.
  • A flashing check engine light with heavy shaking or a burning smell. Pull over somewhere safe. A flashing light on its own usually signals a severe misfire: ease off, skip hard acceleration and call us. Unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, the part of the exhaust that cleans the gases, and damage it. See check engine light diagnostics.
  • The red oil warning light while you're driving. The engine may not be getting the oil it needs.

Plan it soon: book a visit this week

  • Rough idle. "Idle" is the engine running while the car stands still. A rough idle shakes, stumbles or makes the RPM needle bounce at a red light.
  • Misfire. One of the cylinders, the chambers where fuel burns to make power, isn't firing properly. It feels like a jerk or stumble when you accelerate.
  • Stalling. The engine shuts off at a stop or as you slow down.
  • Loss of power. The car struggles up hills or when you merge onto Route 1.
  • Smoke from the tailpipe. Blue-gray smoke usually means oil is burning. Thick white smoke with a sweet smell can mean coolant (the liquid that carries heat away from the engine) is getting where it shouldn't. Black smoke usually means too much fuel.

Can wait: mention it at your next visit

  • Gas mileage slowly getting worse.
  • An oily film on the engine but no drips on your driveway.

One reassurance for cold North Shore mornings: a little white vapor from the tailpipe that disappears once the engine warms up is normal condensation, not a problem.

What a tune-up means on today's cars

"Tune-up" used to mean hands-on adjustments: setting the ignition timing, adjusting the carburetor, replacing points. Today a computer runs the engine and makes those adjustments by itself, constantly. So a tune-up now usually means replacing the parts that wear out on a schedule and checking that the engine runs the way it should. Depending on the car, that can include:

  • Spark plugs, the small parts that make the spark that lights the fuel. Some last a long time; others need replacing sooner.
  • The engine air filter, which keeps dust and grit out of the air the engine breathes.
  • Ignition coils, which send high voltage to the spark plugs, when one is failing.
  • A fuel filter, on cars that have one you can replace (many newer cars don't).
  • A check for stored fault codes, the messages the car's computer saves when it detects a problem.

Your owner's manual lists what's due and when. Looking for a tune-up in Saugus? Say "tune-up" when you call, and tell us what made you think of it: a rough idle, worse mileage, or just the calendar. We'll tell you which items your car is actually due for, so you don't pay for a "full tune-up" package it doesn't need.

How we handle engine repair: find it, explain it, then fix it

Engine symptoms overlap. A rough idle can come from a worn spark plug, a cracked vacuum hose (a rubber line that leaks air into the engine), a dirty sensor or something deeper. Guessing means replacing parts until the problem goes away, and you pay for every guess.

At V-Tech Auto Services it goes in this order:

  1. Find the cause. We check the engine, read any stored fault codes and test the likely parts.
  2. Explain it. You hear what's wrong, why it happened and what happens if you wait. We'll show you the part when we can.
  3. Sort it. Fix now, plan it soon, or can wait.
  4. Repair it once you say yes.

V-Tech is a Master Mechanic-led team with 28 years of hands-on experience on foreign and domestic cars. The order is the same for a worn spark plug as for a bigger engine repair.

What decides the cost of an engine repair

We don't post engine repair prices. Until the cause is found, any number would be a guess. What moves it:

  • What's actually causing it.A worn spark plug or a dirty sensor is a different job from a problem inside the engine.
  • How much has to come apart to reach it.On some engines the spark plugs and coils sit right on top; on others, parts of the intake have to come off first.
  • Whether one problem has caused another.A misfire left running can damage the catalytic converter, and an engine that overheated can damage a gasket.
  • Parts for your make and model. The same part can cost very different amounts from one car to the next.
  • How long it's been driven that way.Catching a symptom early is usually the smaller bill.

Work vans and daily drivers

If your van is how you earn a living, every day it sits costs you money. If your car is how the kids get to school and you get to work, it's the same problem in a different shape.

V-Tech works on small and medium vehicles, foreign and domestic, for drivers in Saugus and across the North Shore. We sort what has to be fixed now to keep the vehicle working safely from what can be scheduled around your jobs. Ask how long it will take, and we'll tell you what we know and what we can't know until we've looked. One of the reviews below is from a Mercedes Sprinter owner.

Engine Repair & Tune-Ups FAQs

Why is my car running rough?

"Running rough" usually means the engine shakes, stumbles or hesitates, most often at a stop or when you accelerate. Common causes include worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil, a vacuum leak, a dirty or failing sensor, or a fuel delivery problem. Because so many parts can cause the same feeling, the answer has to come from a diagnosis, not a guess. If the check engine light is flashing, ease off, skip hard acceleration and call us. If the car shakes badly or you smell burning, pull over somewhere safe.

What does an engine misfire feel like?

Most drivers describe a jerk, shudder or stumble, as if the car briefly loses power, often when accelerating or climbing a hill. At a stop it can feel like a rhythmic shake through the seat or steering wheel. You may also notice the check engine light, worse gas mileage or a smell of fuel. A misfire doesn't fix itself, so have it looked at soon.

Is it safe to drive an overheating car?

No. Pull over where it's safe, turn the engine off and let it cool. Don't open the radiator cap on a hot engine: the coolant inside is under pressure and can spray out and burn you. Then call us and tell us what the temperature gauge did and whether you saw steam or a puddle.

What's included in a tune-up?

It depends on your car. On most modern engines a tune-up means replacing the parts due on the maker's schedule, often spark plugs and the engine air filter, and checking how the engine runs. Older cars may need more. We tell you which items your car is actually due for before doing any of them.

Why is my engine making a knocking noise?

A knock can come from fuel lighting at the wrong moment (called pinging), from low oil, or from worn parts inside the engine. A light ping when you accelerate hard is different from a deep, steady knock that speeds up with the engine, and the second one is serious. Check your oil level if you can do it safely, and don't keep driving with a loud knock. Call us and describe the sound, or record it on your phone.
