Stop driving and call if it won't go into gear, slips badly, or smells burnt with smoke. Driving on a slipping transmission makes the damage worse.
Your transmission is the gearbox that sends the engine's power to the wheels and changes gears as you speed up. These are the signs it needs attention:

Transmission slipping? Don't push it. Call us.

A lot of "transmission problems" turn out to be something else, or something smaller. These get checked before anyone says the word "rebuild":
If the fix turns out to be a seal, a sensor or fluid, that's what we'll tell you.

A major transmission job is one of the bigger bills a car can bring. Whoever does the work, you should get straight answers to these questions before you say yes:
At V-Tech, we expect these questions, and we answer them before work starts.

V-Tech Auto Services handles repairs and maintenance on both manual and automatic transmissions, on foreign and domestic cars, for drivers in Saugus and the North Shore.
An automatic depends on its fluid. The fluid does three jobs: it creates the pressure that changes gears, it lubricates, and it carries heat away. That's why fluid level and condition come up so often. A manual depends on its clutch (the part that connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox) and on its own gear oil.
Routine transmission service starts with checking that fluid and changing it when your car's schedule calls for it. Some problems are solved by a fluid service or a leak repair. Others need major internal work or a replacement unit. Figuring out which one you're facing comes first, and we explain it before anything is decided.

We don't post prices, because the real number depends on what we find. On a transmission, these are the things that move it:
You'll hear what the repair involves before you decide.
… I really like it when the mechanic explains the repair to you. … But overall I like it when they explain the job because it makes me feel better about paying. Instead of just being told your car is done pay us money. They take the time to explain what caused the problem what they did to fix it which for me is great customer service. …
… Quality work, reasonable pricing, honest assessments...I can't ask for much more than that.
Slipping (the revs rise but the car doesn't speed up), delayed or harsh shifts, a burning smell, red or brown fluid under the car, whining or clunking, and a car stuck in one gear with little power. Any of these is worth a check. Slipping that keeps getting worse, or a car that won't go into gear, means stop driving and call.
Often you can't tell from the driver's seat. Engine misfires, worn mounts, axles and sensors can all feel like a transmission problem. That's why we check the fluid, look for leaks, read the codes and test before anyone calls it a transmission repair.
Yes. An automatic uses fluid pressure to change gears, so when the level drops, it can slip, shift late or overheat. Low fluid also means it's going somewhere, so finding the leak is part of the fix.
It depends on the car. Some carmakers call the fluid "lifetime". Others list an interval, often a shorter one for hard use like pulling a trailer, short trips or stop-and-go traffic. Start with your owner's manual, and ask us what we see in your fluid the next time the car is in.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and it's your call. It depends on what failed, what shape the rest of the car is in, and how long you plan to keep it. We lay out what we found and what the repair involves so you can weigh it yourself, without pressure either way.
Yes. V-Tech Auto Services works on manual and automatic transmissions. If you drive a stick and notice grinding, trouble getting into gear, or a clutch that slips or feels different, call and describe it, and we'll tell you the next step.
